Yucca whipplei (common names in other languages: Our-Lord's Candle, Chaparral, Quixote Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The solitary, acaulescente (without a trunk), monocarpic Yucca whipplei has thin, flexible, usually entire leaves . These are bluish to gray in color and 25 to 65 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide.

The panicle inflorescence becomes, as with Yucca elata , 2 to 5 meters high. The fragrant, spherical, drooping flowers are 3 to 5 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The six identical bloom bracts are white to cream-colored, with purple tips. The flowering period extends from March to June.

The mountain forms are frost hardy to –18 ° C when dry . They are rare in the collections in Europe and difficult to cultivate, but one specimen in the collection of T. Bolliger in Switzerland has blossomed.

distribution

Yucca whipplei is common in Baja California, Mexico and in the southern part of the US state of California in chaparral regions and desert regions at altitudes between 400 m and 2400 m. This species often grows together with Yucca brevifolia , Yucca schidigera , Yucca baccata and various agave and cactus species.
