history

prehistory

At the beginning of the 20th century, Celtic stone graves were found on the Wolferburg , a high plateau above the town . They refer to an early Celtic settlement of the area in the Hallstatt or Latène period . Because of the exposed altitude of the site, it could have been a refuge . This is supported by other Celtic finds in nearby Bad Orb and in Glauburg .

Place name

The place name has changed several times in the course of history. First mentioned in 1435, it is called Haselborn , then Heselnorf in 1538 and via Heseldorf (around 1600) to today's Hesseldorf . Hesseldorf is derived from hasal , the old German word for hazelnut.

middle Ages

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1435, when "villa dicta Haselborn " (village called Haselborn) was separated from the parish of Aufenau and assigned to Wächtersbach.

Modern times

As early as 1601 a miller was named Hans Wilhelm in Hesseldorf. The Wilhelm Müller family also manufactured and sold millstones in the area. At times there were two mills in Hesseldorf

The first school in Hesseldorf is mentioned in 1715. In 1837 a new school building was built, which still characterizes the townscape today with its tower structure. The new school complex also included a large school yard and school garden. An annex was added to the building, which is now used for other purposes, in the 1950s.

In 1939 the place belonged to the Gelnhausen district and had 272 inhabitants. As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Hesseldorf was incorporated into the city of Wächtersbach on December 31, 1970, together with Neudorf , Weilers and Wittgenborn on a voluntary basis .

For Hesseldorf there is a local district according to the Hessian municipal code . The local advisory board consists of five members. The current mayor is Otmar Müller, his deputy is Mark Grillwitzer.
