The Celtic Prince

Karl Diller presents a "Red Album"

The German special postage stamp "Keltenfürst vom Glauberg" (144 cents, circulation: 17 million, graphic designer: Werner Schmidt, Frankfurt am Main) from the series Archeology in Germany was approved on January 7, 2005 by the parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Karl Diller ( Member of the Bundestag ) in Büdingen .

For decades, archaeologists on the Glauberg have been researching the earlier Celts, who are still puzzling. It was only during a reconnaissance flight in 1988 that local researchers recognized the traces of a huge burial mound in a grain field on the southern slope of the Glauberg. A second burial mound was added later, which could be localized by geophysical measurements. Both hills were leveled and couldn't be seen from the ground. In 1994, the State Office for Monument Preservation in Hesse began an excavation lasting several years. Today the tomb has been restored. The burial places of two Celtic warriors from the 5th century BC. BC prove the elevated position of the deceased. The graves are among the most magnificent known from early Celtic times. Another sensation was the discovery of a life-size stone figure of a warrior. The statue, completely preserved except for the feet, is provided with a hood-like headgear in the form of a mistletoe leaf. Since mistletoe had an important cultic meaning among the Celts, this may indicate the role of the prince as the chief priest. This figure of the "Celtic Prince of Glauberg" is the most important find of Celtic culture in Hesse to date.
  • The Glauberg Museum shows finds from the Paleolithic to the High Middle Ages .
  • A separate museum building on the Glauberg, the Keltenwelt am Glauberg , was opened on May 6, 2011. This museum was partly financed by the state of Hesse and the municipality. A short time after it opened, the building received the Hessian Architecture Prize 2011 for exemplary building. As if floating out of the mountain, its panorama window offers a view of the reconstructed Celtic burial mound.
