action
Thane Furrows is a children's author. He is considered gifted, but capricious, and spends most of his time in his house. He's pretty much upset about anything. Already in the morning when he eats his cornflakes and he has too much or too little milk left and then a fly sits on his plate. Or the articles in the morning paper, which mostly only convey negative news. He hates his boss's wife because her manner upsets him, and he hates his neighbor, who always listens to loud music that drones right into his apartment. Thane keeps a stuffed dog as a pet because it doesn't cause any problems. An insurance agent who unexpectedly stands in front of his door welcomes him in a noticeably friendly manner, has a lot of insurances recommended and angrily throws the man out of his apartment. Calls from his dominant mother upset him, as do the many nonsensical advertisements in the mail. Sometimes he just wishes to be dead because then none of this would bother him anymore.
One day Thane gets a call that something special should happen at 8 p.m. When his friend Al Dalby visits him that day, he philosophizes with him about the finiteness of life and suspects him of having made this strange call. But Al denies this and asks Thane if he is not feeling well, since he could hear voices now. After Al says goodbye, Thane watches a little more TV and is extremely upset when a candidate from a game show doesn't know the answer to a simple question. He now personally messes with his neighbor when he starts to listen to his annoying music again. Since the conversation is of no use, Thane simply cuts off the power line to the upper apartment.
After it gets close to 8 p.m. and the strange voice has answered several times, Thane is gradually getting restless. The doorbell rings at 8 p.m. sharp and a taxi driver is at the door to pick up Than. He goes to his stretch limousine and gets in, where he meets the personified death. Thane describes him as abnormal and does not want to believe that he should be dead now. This is not funny for death, because he felt called by Thane after he had mentioned his name 18,000 times. He would be useless to him because Thane would only nag at everything and would not have done anything useful for anyone. After Thane continues to complain about death and discipline him, he suddenly finds himself alive in his apartment and death is happy to be rid of Thane.
