Hilda Charlotte Graef (born February 14, 1907 in Berlin ; † 1970 ) was a Catholic theologian and writer .

Life

Hilda Graef was the daughter of Harald Graef (1856–1917) and Mietje Salomons, a Jew. After graduating from high school , she studied English and German at the University of Berlin from 1925 to 1930 and then worked as a teacher at a Protestant school until she was dismissed in 1933 because of her Jewish descent. From 1934 to 1936 she worked as a housekeeper in Marburg . In 1936, because of the increasing persecution of the Jews, she had to emigrate to England , where she worked as a primary school teacher.

After studying Protestant theology at King's College London from 1938 to 1940 , she converted to Catholicism in March 1941 . From 1941 to 1954 she worked in the editorial department of the "Lexicon of Patristic Greek" in Oxford and wrote articles for the second edition of the " Lexicon for Theology and Church ". She also translated books by Karl Rahner , Hans Urs von Balthasar and other German-speaking Catholic theologians into English.

Graef wrote mainly about mysticism and mystics and translated many theological works from German into English. Her work on the history of Mariology and devotion to Mary with the title Maria is remarkable . A history of teaching and devotion , because it recognized similar problems and unresolved questions in Mariology as the Innsbruck Bishop Paulus Rusch , who shortly afterwards published his essay Mariological evaluations on the same topic.
