history
In 1753, Chester settlers were granted the right to settle in an area of 30,000 acres , which in addition to today's Hill also included Bristol and Bridgewater and parts of Wilmot and Danbury . At first the settlement was called New Chester and belonged to Grafton County . In 1790 there were 312 inhabitants. In 1837 New Chester was renamed in honor of Isaac Hill , then New Hampshire Governor and Senator under President James Buchanan . In 1868 Hill was removed from Grafton County and Merrimack was added. The construction of the Franklin Falls Dam on the Pemigewasset River made the relocation of Hill necessary from 1938. The residents bought higher land and planned a new town. By June 1941 the new town hall, the school and thirty houses were in place. In addition, roads and the water supply were completed. Chester B. Jordan was born in Hill , a later governor of Illinois .
