Heaven over the Swamp is a 1949 Italian film about the Italian virgin and martyr Maria Goretti . The film premiered in West Germany on April 13, 1951.
action
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries there was poverty in the Pontine Swamps ; the malaria spreading. Farmer Luigi Goretti and his wife Assunta are on the move with their children and are looking for work. In Nettuno they find work on a count's estate. In vain, the landlord Serenelli asks the family to leave. Since the Goretti family was sent by the Count, they are allowed to stay, but Serenelli immediately makes it clear that he is in charge.
When visiting the weekly market, the devout daughter Maria's wish to see the sea comes true. She befriends Serenelli's son Alessandro.
Maria's father falls ill with malaria. The doctor immediately sends him to the hospital, but Luigi Goretti dies of his illness. Giovanni Serenelli hints at Assunta Goretti that he wants to marry her.
Maria attends class so that she can celebrate First Communion . While working in the fields, Alessandro tries to approach her immorally, but she escapes. In the period that followed, Alessandro made a few more attempts, but to no avail. During her first communion, Mary prays for salvation. When the family goes to work in the fields and Maria has to stay behind alone with Alessandro, Alessandro attacks again. When Maria struggles, he stabs her with an awl . Giovanni Serenelli discovers the seriously injured Maria; Alessandro is arrested.
Maria dies a day later in the hospital; while dying she forgives Alessandro.
