Life

Hippolyt von Bothmer comes from the Bavarian branch of the von Bothmer family . He was the son of Carl Heinrich Ernst von Bothmer (1770-1845), formerly the Württemberg ambassador at the Bavarian court and heir to Mehring, and his first wife Antoinette, née Baroness von Hanstein (1782-1826). The fifth majorate at Bothmer Castle , Felix Gottlob Graf von Bothmer (1804–1876) and the Bavarian generals Friedrich von Bothmer (1805–1886) and Maximilian von Bothmer (1816–1878) were his brothers. His father received the Bavarian indigenous class in 1817 and was at the same time “in that of his ancestor Friederich Johann, by Emperor Karl VI. on November 4, 1713 cum privilegio usus, et de non usu, acquired count status recognized by the King's Majesty for himself and his descent on December 8, BC ”. Since then he and his sons have held the title of count.

From 1827 Bothmer received military training in the Bavarian Cadet Corps and in 1831 joined the 13th Infantry Regiment of the Bavarian Army as a flag junior . In 1832 he was promoted to sub-lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Regiment , advanced to captain and was retired as such in 1848.

He moved to London, entered the German Legion as a major (Crimean War) and was naturalized as a British citizen on December 31, 1856 . After staying in England and France, he returned to Germany in 1865.

From 1868 he was diplomatically active, first for the North German Confederation , then for the German Empire. First he was consul of the North German Confederation in Trebizond from June 1, 1868 . On vacation from the beginning of 1869, he was deployed in the Franco-Prussian War in the administration of the occupied territories of France near the prefecture of Laon . In September 1871 he returned to Trebizond. From the end of November 1872 he represented the German Empire in Sarajevo as consul . On April 15, 1876, he was transferred to Marseille as consul and took over the business there on July 1. On leave since December 13, 1880, he was retired on January 26, 1881.

Hippolyt von Bothmer was married three times, initially from 1845 to Henriette von Hartmann (* 1825), a daughter of Jakob von Hartmann . That marriage ended in divorce, and Bothmer married Minny Young in 1856, who became well known as a writer. This marriage also ended in divorce; in his third marriage he married Anna Düpke in 1887, widowed Neuhoff. This last marriage was divorced in 1889. The first marriage had a daughter, Caroline (* 1845); the second the son Alfred Felix Graf von Bothmer (1859–1934), later the eighth majorate at Bothmer Castle, the daughter Mabel (* 1860).
