Friedrich Ludwig Carl Ernst Graf von Bothmer (born September 11, 1805 in Munich , † July 29, 1886 there ) was a Bavarian general of the infantry .

Life

family

Friedrich came from the Bothmer family . He was the second son of the minister at the Electoral Palatinate court, Karl Graf von Bothmer (1770-1845) and his wife Antoinette, née Freiin von Hanstein (1782-1826). His brother was Felix Graf von Bothmer (1804–1876).

On August 17, 1852, he married Adelheid Freiin von Stralenheim (1832–1855), the couple remained childless. After his first wife died in 1855, he remarried in 1874. From this marriage a child was born.

Military career

Bothmer graduated from the cadet corps and the pagerie . After graduating from high school in 1825 at (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , he studied in Würzburg , where he joined the Corps Franconia . He then joined the 2nd Artillery Regiment of the Bavarian Army as a Junker in 1827 , but took his leave as a second lieutenant in 1833 to enter the service of the Wittelsbach King Otto I of Greece . After six months of service, he was promoted to captain and distinguished himself in several battles against the rebellious Messenians and Mainotes . After an eight-year stay, Bothmer was employed again as a first lieutenant in the Bavarian Army and served in the 1st Field Artillery Regiment . Here he was in 1847 for Captain II. Class transported and 1848 adjutant of Field Marshal Prince Charles of Bavaria .

By 1866, Bothmer became major general and commander of the federal fortress in Ulm , when he led the artillery reserve into the Main campaign during the war against Prussia . In this position he took part in the battles near Kaltennordheim and Kissingen .

In 1869 he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed commander of the 4th division . With this large association Bothmer first crossed the French border in 1870 in the Franco-German War and had the vanguard of the German III at Weißenburg . Army . Thanks to his excellent leadership at Wörth , Sedan and in front of Paris , he was able to prepare the successes in an effective way, especially in relation to the French failures on October 13 and November 29, 1870.

After the war, Bothmer became inspector of the artillery and the train in 1873 . In 1875 he became the owner of the 1st Foot Artillery Regiment and two years later Bothmer was promoted to General of the Infantry. In 1879 he suggested the establishment of the Bavarian Army Museum to War Minister Maillinger .

After his resignation was accepted in 1883, he lived in seclusion in his hometown of Munich until his death.
