Career

society

Hjörtur played his first league game for Fylkir Reykjavík on July 6, 2011 at the age of 16 and brought it to nine league games that season. In 2012 there were three games at the beginning of the season, then he moved to the Netherlands for PSV Eindhoven , but initially only played in the reserve team "Jong PSV" in the second division .

For the 2016 season he switched to the Swedish club IFK Göteborg on loan . After he was out at the beginning of the season due to a hip injury, he came to his first appearance in the Swedish first division on May 2 and was a regular player in central defense from then on. In July 2016 he moved to Denmark to Brøndby IF , where he won the cup in the 2017/18 season. With the Danes he also took part in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League . In 2016 they failed in the play-offs at Panathinaikos Athens , in 2017 in the third qualifying round at Hajduk Split , in 2018 in the play-offs at KRC Genk and in 2019 in the third qualifying round at Sporting Braga .

National team

In 2010, he first took part with the U-17 in the Nordic U-17 championship and then in the first qualifying round of the U-17 European football championship in 2011 , which Iceland survived, but failed in the elite round. The subsequent Nordic U-17 championship was won by Iceland and survived the first qualifying round of the 2012 U-17 European football championship . In 2012 the team won the elite round and qualified for the finals. In it she only won one point against France .

In 2011 he had already participated with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round of the U-19 European Football Championship in 2012 , but failed there as the bottom of the group. In 2012 they were third in the group and in 2013 he survived the first round with the U-19 as second in the group. He then no longer took part in the 2014 elite round, in which the Icelandic juniors failed.

In 2013 and 2014 he took part with the U-21 team in qualifying for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2015 , but failed in the playoffs due to the away goals rule against Denmark . In 2015 and 2016 he took part with the U-21 in the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship 2017 .

In autumn 2015 Hjörtur was invited to international matches for the senior national team for the first time, but has not yet been used. On January 31, 2016, Hjörtur made his national team debut in a friendly against the USA when he came on as a substitute in the second half. In the two games in March, he was only used in the game against Greece and played over 90 minutes, as he initially played a qualifier for the U-21 team. On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by coach Lars Lagerbäck as the youngest player in the squad for the 2016 European Championship , who represented Iceland's men for the first time at a European Championship finals. In the squad he was the player with the fewest internationals. Like three other field players, he was not used in the tournament.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League, which began after the European Championship , he was nominated for a few games, but not used. He was only used in friendly games and scored his first international goal on January 11, 2018 in a 6-0 win against Indonesia . It was only towards the end of qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship that he played again in competitive matches and was used for 90 minutes in four games. As third in the group behind world champions France and Turkey , the Icelanders missed direct qualification. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Icelanders still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
