Alan Dean Foster 2007

Alan Dean Foster (born November 18, 1946 in New York City ) is the author of science fiction and fantasy novels, but best known for his novel versions of well-known films.

Life

Foster studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he made a bachelor's degree in political science in 1968 and graduated with a master's degree in film studies in 1969. From 1969 to 1975 he served in the United States Army Reserve . From 1970 to 1971 he worked as a copywriter, after which he gave courses at UCLA and from 1972 to 1976 at Los Angeles City College .

In 1975 he married JoAnn Oxley. He lives in Prescott , Arizona .

His first short story, Some Notes Concerning a Green Box , was published in August Derleth's Arkham Collector in 1971 . This was followed by other stories that were collected in With Friends Like These (1977, German Meine Galaktischen Freunde ). For his story Our Lady of the Machine (1994) Foster was awarded the Spanish Premio Ignotus in 1995.

His first novel The Tar-Aiym Krang was published in 1972 and laid the foundations for Foster's fictional universe of the Humanx Commonwealth (in the German Homanx Commonwealth ). This fictional interstellar federation is dominated by humans and the thranx, a highly intelligent race of insects. The novels and stories from the Humanx Commonwealth are more or less strongly linked together, including several related about their protagonists or locations novel cycles , whose most testers are the stories about Pip and Flinx. Flinx is an empathic young man named Philip Lynx (aka Flinx) and Pip is his idiosyncratic companion, an Alaspinian miniature dragon. Foster's first as well as his second novel Bloodhype (1973) belong to the stories about Pip and Flinx. Another cycle loosely linked to the Humanx Commonwealth is the trilogy about the ice sailors on the planet Tran-Ky-Ky.

The best known of Foster's fantasy novels is the Bannsänger cycle, the story of a law student who is placed in a parallel world.

With his third novel Luana (1974) Foster entered the field of novel versions for which he is best known today. The film on which this first adaptation work is based is hardly known, however, an Italian B-Picture about a kind of girl Tarzan, the German title is Luana - The Curse of White Gold . That should change, because in the same year the novel version of John Carpenter's Dark Star followed with Dark Star , today a cult film, at that time a neglected first film, at least Foster was able to show that he was able to meet the special demands placed on authors of novel versions. In 1976, the breakthrough came with the "book about the film" for George Lucas ' Star Wars .

This was followed by other novel versions of major science fiction films such as the first three alien films or the Star Trek films by JJ Abrams . In addition to novel versions, including the first novel version of a computer game, Forster also wrote a number of tie-ins , for example for the Star Trek series.

It can be considered Foster's merit to have given the writing of novel versions at least a certain reputation. Still he says:

"It's always amusing to me, you take a book, say, To Kill a Mockingbird, throw away three quarters of it and win an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay. But if you take a screenplay and add three quarters of original material to it - which is a much, much more difficult piece of writing - well, that's by definition 'hackwork.' "

“I always find it funny that you get an Oscar for the“ best adapted screenplay ”if you throw away three quarters of a book, for example“ Who disturbs the nightingale ”. But if you take a script and expand it threefold with something new - which is much more difficult, then it can only be considered a "work of art". "

John Clute remarks on Foster's adaptations that they were written "very professionally and without contempt for the genre."

Foster's interest in ecological topics, foreign countries and cultures is reflected in his works again and again when people are confronted with very strange worlds and environments and cultures that have adapted to them, for example with the whales of the water world of Cachalot , in the vegetation plains of the gigantic trees from Midworld (German "The Thinking Forests") or the arctic ice world of Tran-Ky-Ky.
