action

The Russian Natascha does not want to marry the influential German Karl and therefore escapes the wedding under a pretext.

Meanwhile, the unsuccessful American singer Tom Brackett is touring Germany and Eastern Europe. At a concert in Kaliningrad he meets the runaway Natascha. The two fall in love and make their way to St. Petersburg . Here they experience adventures and they manage to deepen their relationship. However, Natascha has not cleared up Tom about her past, which is why it comes to a break when they meet Karl in St. Petersburg, who is chasing after the two.

background

The plot is based on the Greek saga of Orpheus and Eurydice . Orpheus' wife Eurydice was a nymph . When Aristaios tried to rape her and she fled from him, Virgil tells her that she died in the Georgica from a snake bite that he was responsible for. Orpheus went into the underworld in order to move the god Hades through his song and the play of his lyre to give him back his beloved. His art was so great that his request was actually granted - but on the condition set by Hades and Persephone that he could go ahead on the ascent to the upper world and not look around. Since he did not hear the steps of Eurydice, he looked around and she disappeared again into the underworld.

In Honey Baby , the role of Orpheus is occupied by Tom and that of Eurydice by Natascha. Karl, on the other hand, stands for Hades.

criticism

“The contemporary road movie, which approaches the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice towards the end, gains an idiosyncratic charm, especially through the color dramaturgy. Also convincing from an acting point of view, the film loses credibility in precisely those scenes in which the singer's art is supposed to enchant. "

"Honey Baby" is a road movie with a brilliant soundtrack and unusual images, which the Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki gives his typically quirky signature. "

"The beautiful pictures of the road movie are in stark contrast to the wooden game of" ET "hero Henry Thomas as Tom, ridiculous dialogues (" You dissect my songs with your stupid hip-hop arrangements! ") Do the rest."
