The Hornberg is at a maximum of 584.2  m above sea level. NHN the highest point in the Virngrund in Baden-Württemberg . It is a 2.5 km long ridge with three peaks.

Geographical location and shape

The mountain starts at the northern edge of the small plateau around Ellenberg in the Württemberg Albkreis , with which it is only connected by a narrow footbridge due to valleys in the west and east, and then runs to the west and finally to the south-west with increasing curvature. Compared to the plateau it is little or not prominent, the valleys mentioned and above all the northern foreland around Georgenstadt are 60–80 m lower. Its three peaks follow one another on the ridge that is quite flat at the top, on which a connecting forest path runs. Motorists on the A 7 encounter the Hornberg as a wooded, tunnel-covered mountain bar between the Dinkelsbühl / Fichtenau motorway junction in the north and the Ellwanger Berge motorway service station in the south.

Description of the peaks, each with height above mean sea level (NHN) and geographic coordinates :

Northeast tip

( 579  m , 49 ° 1 ′  N , 10 ° 13 ′  E ) To the north, hillside forest runs down, in the south there is an open field. In addition to a transmitter , there is a football field and three tennis courts . The " Ellenberg Water Tower " (150 m³ capacity, 29 m high), which carries a viewing platform, is just under 450 m south-south-east across the footbridge on the Ellenberg plateau .

Middle peak

( 584.2  m , 49 ° 1 '  N , 10 ° 12'  O ) To the north Hangenwald pulls down, southeast adjacent to free corridor, from here on the west of the comb is fully forested. On it is a transmitter and a water tank . The A 7 passes under the Hornberg almost 250 m further west from here in the Virngrund tunnel .

Southwest tip

( 570.1  m , 49 ° 1 '  N , 10 ° 11'  O ) It is covered and is slightly off the removed connection path. The lowest of the three, it rises almost in turn above its surroundings because of its location at the top of the ridge.

geology

Coming from the north, the Hornberg is one of the first elevations in the northeastern foothills of the Alb to carry the Jurassic layers , especially its lower layer ( Lias α), above a slope on which the tuber marl spreads out. Further to the north, in the eastern Swabian-Franconian forest mountains , the landscape still consists mainly of the parlor sandstone of the Middle Keuper , and towards the south the layers of the Lower Jurassic soon cover the entire landscape.

Traffic and walking

Between the middle and south-western summit, the A 7 crosses under the mountain in the Virngrund tunnel in a north-south direction . The state road  2220 between Dinkelsbühl in the northeast and Ellwangen in the southwest runs over the plateau around Ellenberg on a longer path that leads east around the steep Hornberg ridge. Several hiking trails and footpaths run through the wooded mountain landscape and its surroundings.
