Professor Horst Stephan, 1873–1954, systematic theologian

Horst Emil Stephan (born August 29, 1873 in Sayda ; † January 9, 1954 in Leipzig ) was a Protestant theologian and publicist.

Life

As the youngest of four children, Stephan graduated from the Sächsisches Landesgymnasium Sankt Afra in 1893 and studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig from 1894 to 1898 . In 1898 he passed the first state examination and in 1900 the second state examination in Dresden as well as the theological licentiate examination . From 1898 to 1899 he was also the assistant editor of the magazine Christliche Welt in Frankfurt am Main . He spent his legal clerkship at the Christian-Weise-Gymnasium in Zittau . From Easter 1902 to Easter 1907 he taught at the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig.

After completing his habilitation , he was appointed private lecturer in church history by the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig in 1906 . In 1907 he received a private lecturer in systematic theology and modern church history at the University of Marburg . There he became associate professor in 1914 and full professor of systematic theology in 1919. From 1922 he taught dogmatics and systematic theology in Halle and from 1926 systematic and historical theology at the University of Leipzig. From 1931 to 1932 he was dean of the theological faculty at Leipzig University.

Stephan was in close contact with Martin Rade , the editor of the “Christian World”. In the twenties and thirties he wrote several theological textbooks (especially a "Doctrine of Faith") that were widely used. From 1920 he was editor of the magazine for theology and church ; He also belonged to the group of editors of the second edition of the concise dictionary "Religion in Past and Present".

Stephan is one of the co-founders of the Society for Church History .

The marriage entered into in 1902 with Hedwig Mayer, a daughter of the lawyer Otto Mayer , resulted in two children.
