How to Talk to Girls at Parties is a British - American science fiction film by John Cameron Mitchell , who as part of the May 21, 2017 Film Festival of Cannes premiered. The film is based on a story by Neil Gaiman , in which punk meets science fiction and tells a love story. How to Talk to Girls at Parties combines several film genres.

action

In Croydon , a dreary suburb of London, in the summer of 1977. While the people of the country celebrate the Queen's jubilee, the youth rebel and every teenager in the country wants to be a punk , hooked on the Sex Pistols . So does Enn and his buddies John and Vic, who have wild hairstyles and the typical torn clothes, but they only succeed to a limited extent with the punk attitude. They like to spend their time with Boadicea, a worn-out punk queen who throws parties in her hip rock club where Enn, John and Vic want to get to know girls, but they don't succeed. After one of these parties, they go looking for an after-party.

When they happen to pass a house with fascinating music playing, they ring curiously and are greeted by a strange group of young women who wear brightly colored latex clothes and behave extremely strangely. Enn is especially fond of the pretty and enigmatic Zan. What he does not know, however, is that the girls are not from America, as they believe, and not even from Earth, but from another planet in a distant galaxy. You came to earth to prepare for a rite of passage, and Zan was given permission to be in the human world for 48 hours.

Literary template

The film is loosely based on a 2006 story of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Gaiman is a British writer of short stories, science fiction novels, comics and graphic novels, but he has also written scripts for films and television series. The television series American Gods is based on one of Gaiman's novels . Inspired by one of the characters he invented, television series like Lucifer emerged .

production

Cast and crew at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2017

Directed by John Cameron Mitchell , who, together with Philippa Goslett, also adapted Gaiman's story for the film. However, they only used this as a stepping stone for a very loosely assembled plot. Mitchell had become an icon of gay cinema with his first film Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2001 .

Nicole Kidman plays Queen Boadicea, and Elle Fanning took on the role of Zan. Kidman received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 2011 for her role in Michell's last film, the drama Rabbit Hole . Enn and his friends John and Vic are played by Alex Sharp , Ethan Lawrence and Abraham Lewis . Ruth Wilson plays PT Stella, Tom Brooke PT Waldo and Joey Ansah PT Bob.

Filming began on November 9, 2015 in Sheffield, which was used as a backdrop in London. The score was composed by Nico Muhly and Jamie Stewart . The soundtrack for the film includes 19 pieces of music and is due to be released by Sony Classical in April 2018.

Three teasers were published in May 2017. The film premiered on May 21, 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival . From July 1st 2017 the film was shown at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and in October 2017 at the London Film Festival . In March 2018 there was a screening at the Dublin Film Festival. A theatrical release in the USA took place on May 25, 2018.
