Hubert Constant

Hubert Constant OMI (born September 18, 1931 in Camp-Perrin , † September 23, 2011 in Canape-Vert) was a Haitian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien . He was also President of the Haitian Bishops' Conference from 1999 to 2005 .

Life

Hubert Constant joined the Order of the Oblates (OMI) in 1955 and was ordained a priest on September 15, 1958 . He worked in parish ministry in Cap-Haïtien , Les Cayes and Port-au-Prince . He also worked as a teacher and director at the Saint-Eugène de Mazenod small seminary in Camp-Perrin. From 1979 he was director of the College Saint-Jean in Les Cayes.

In 1981 he was appointed Provincial of the Haitian Religious Province for two terms, six years . From 1987 to 1991 he headed the Provincial Scholastic Institute .

Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the newly established diocese of Fort-Liberté on January 31, 1991 . The episcopal ordination donated to him the Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien, François Gayot SMM , on April 7th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Jean Alix Verrier , Bishop of Les Cayes , and Joseph Willy Romélus , Bishop of Jérémie .

On November 5, 2003, he was appointed Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien. During the disempowerment of Jean-Bertrand Aristides in 2004, Archbishop Constant urged the parties to the conflict not to use force. On March 1, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation. He died of a heart attack.
