Chibly Cardinal Langlois (born November 29, 1958 in La Vallée-de-Jacmel , Haiti ) is Bishop of Les Cayes .

Life

Chibly Langlois, from a poor family, studied philosophy at the Notre Dame de Cazeau seminary in Port-au-Prince and theology at the Notre Dame de Turgeau seminary in Port-au-Prince. On September 22, 1991 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Jacmel . Then he was vicar at the Cathedral of St. Jacques et St. Philippe in Jacmel until 1994 . From 1994 to 1996 he studied pastoral theology at the Lateran University in Rome and obtained his licentiate with a dissertation on The New Evangelization in Haiti . On his return he was pastor in Les Orangers near Jacmel. He also headed the diocesan pastoral center of the Jacmel diocese and from 1999 taught at the Notre Dame de Turgeau seminary in Port-au-Prince as a professor of pastoral theology.

On April 8, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Fort-Liberté . The Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien , Hubert Constant OMI , donated him episcopal ordination on June 6 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Les Cayes, Guire Poulard , and the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince , Joseph Serge Miot . On August 15, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Les Cayes. In the same year Langlois became President of the Haitian Bishops' Conference . He is also the official mediator between the opposition and the supporters of President Michel Martelly .

In the consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giacomo in Augusta in the college of cardinals . Chibly Langlois is the first cardinal to come from Haiti.

He has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since May 22, 2014, and of the Dicastery for Communication since July 13, 2016 .
