Hubert Tigges (born October 20, 1895 in Förde-Grevenbrück (today Lennestadt in the Sauerland ), † February 11, 1971 in Wuppertal ) was a German tour operator . As the founder of the travel company Dr. Tigges trips can be described as the pioneer of package tourism .

Life

Tigges was born in 1895 in Förde-Grevenbrück in the Sauerland as the eldest of eight children (twelve according to another source) of a working-class family. As the only child in this family, he graduated from high school in 1914. He then went to the First World War and returned as a pacifist in 1918 . He joined the Christian youth movement Quickborn and began studying economics . He spent his studies in the cities of Münster , Freiburg , Cologne and Würzburg . In 1917 he joined the Catholic student union WKSt.V. Unitas Burgundia Munster a. His doctorate was on the subject of social wages. He was a lecturer at adult education centers in Düsseldorf , Elberfeld , Barmen , Remscheid , Solingen and Lennep ; he taught economics and sociology .

Influenced by the writings downfall of the West by Oswald Spengler and range in Europe by Hermann von Keyserling he founded in Sauerland the 1925 European circle (circle for European Education). This group promoted a united Europe and organized lectures and discussions on the topic. As part of this work, he organized the first trips to art-historical destinations within Germany and neighboring countries with the audience of his lectures. He recognized the value of these trips, which he called the "educational factor".

For the first time in Elberfeld, Tigges organized trips under his name in 1928 (Dr. Tigges group trips ) . These first educational trips led to Lake Constance , the Black Forest and Flanders . A year later he accompanied a group to Naples . In 1932 Tigges ended his teaching activities at the adult education centers, among other things for political reasons, he devoted himself entirely to organizing trips. The travel service opened up more and more new areas, the first trip to Mallorca took place in 1934. In the 1930s, Greece and North Africa were already goals of the Tigges company. An expansion to London under the name Central Europe Tours Ltd. took place in 1938.

The Second World War stopped the efforts in London and its other business activities, in 1939 foreign travel was banned and he was drafted into military service.

After the war, Tigges had to start all over again. He first founded the Marées publishing house in 1946, which had specialized in travel and art books in its program. After the currency reform he started again with his travel company Dr. Tigges trips , started with German destinations. In the post-war years, Dr. Tigges is the fourth largest German travel company after TOUROPA , Scharnow and Hummel . The focus continued to be on challenging educational trips.

Tigges started an academy for tour guides in 1955 (according to another source 1953) , which became an example for other companies. In the same year he included air travel in his package program, at the same time the area of long-distance tourism with Persia , India , Mexico , Japan and the South Seas . The devout Catholic Tigges also included pilgrimages to Rome , Padua , Assisi , Lourdes , Lisieux , Fátima and the Holy Land in his program.

At the end of 1967 the Dr. Tigges trips incorporated into the Touristik Union International (TUI), to which the Touropa, Scharnow and Hummel companies had previously merged. The Dr. Tigges-Fahrt was taken off the market by TUI in 1990 and replaced by TUI Study Tour, but was revived by Gebeco in 1997 .

His wife, a teacher, met Tigges through the Quickborn. He died on February 11, 1971 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld as a result of a traffic accident in which he was involved. His grave is in the Evangelical Reformed cemetery in Krummacherstrasse . In his honor, the street Dr.-Tigges-Weg was named on November 21, 1977 in Elberfeld . The street is in the immediate vicinity of the house that he lived in for almost 20 years.
