The Hunger Mountain is a 242-meter-high mountain in the 19th Vienna district Döbling .

geography

The Hungerberg is located in the Grinzing district of Döbling . In the north the Hungerberg is bounded by the Nesselbach , in the east the Hohe Warte joins it. The mountain lies in a northeastern branch of the Vienna Woods and forms the transition between the Eastern Alps and the Vienna Basin . Today it is one of the urbanized city hills of Vienna that can be seen in the soft image.

geology

The Hungerberg consists of sands and clays of the Sarmatian and, like the Laaer Berg in the south of Vienna, is covered in the uppermost area by ice-age gravel from the highest of the six river terraces , which were deposited like stairs by the Danube . The structure of the terraces in the Vienna area has not yet been fully clarified, as the Vienna Basin ( burglary basin ) is still a tectonically active area and adjustments are therefore possible.

history

Vineyard Hungerberg

The Hungerberg was surrounded by cold winds until the middle of the 19th century, so that the vines grown here only produced inferior wine . Hence the name of the difficult to work soil, which only brought poor yield. Due to the increasing development of the area, however, the climate changed, and the Hungerberg is now designated as the best location for viticulture. That is why viticulture is practiced today on the southern and eastern slopes. All around, however, the Hungerberg is heavily built-up, with the Julius-Deutsch-Hof on the western slope and the Anton-Proksch-Hof on the northern slope .
