The 1981/82 season was the eighth season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . JYP Jyväskylä and FoPS Forssa qualified for the SM liiga relegation , in which both teams failed.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The six best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs, with the two first-placed teams in the main round not having to compete until the second playoff round. The two playoff winners finally qualified for the SM liiga relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
