I need you is a film drama by the director Max Färberböck from 2019 . The fashion designer Silvi leads a satisfied life until a murder occurs in her family environment and she has to look after the two children. The resulting emotional development is the main theme of the film and the question of the cause of the tragedy remains largely open.

action

Fashion designer Silvi lives happily with her partner Alexander until her life is turned inside out by a murder. Her sister Sabine was killed by her husband. Although she has not had any contact with her sister for a long time, she is now given the task of giving the children Jani and Alexandra a new home. Since Silvi never wanted to have children of her own, the new situation presents her with great challenges. The rapprochement between those affected is not easy, especially for Silvi and Jani. Both are troubled by the death of the loved one, but each shows this in his own way. Jani would like to keep the memory of his mother in honor. But he realizes that Sabine also had mistakes when he overhears a conversation between Silvi and Alexander. Silvi had previously told Alexander by phone that she thought their relationship was over because she would not love him. But Alexander does not give up and fights. In a personal conversation between the two, it becomes clear why Silvi is reluctant to bond. She pretends not to need love because she would be better without it. But the real reason is: She doesn't want to go the way her sister had taken, because despite all the apparent family happiness and the pursuit of perfection and prosperity, Sabine got caught in a fatal vortex. Although her husband loved her dearly and granted her every conceivable wish, which ultimately went beyond his powers and he owed the banks on account of her, she had betrayed him with other men. Even if her brother-in-law had tried harder, it would never have been enough. Silvi doesn't want a permanent partnership for herself because she had to watch helplessly what can become of a marriage. Add to this that she feels guilty about seeing the drama of this marriage coming. She had recognized Sabine's misfortune for a long time and had done nothing. Since Silvi struggles with these self-reproaches, she cannot understand what Alexander wants from such a woman. But he tells her that that's why he loves her so much.

reception

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv commented: “A finely nuanced rapprochement between the woman who pretends not to need anyone for her long-term happiness and the children who lack more than just a caregiver. The final picture shows a new quality of closeness: a hug - finally! "

Prisma said: “You haven't seen actors talk about life that closely for a long time. Almost ready for Ingmar Bergman. The end leaves everything open. How do you even get out of your skin, out of this - in the old sense - shitty, ever-increasing 'social distancing'? "

TV Today judged: "[...] This is exciting, because Färberböck and Schuchmann tell with skilful gaps and ambivalent, unpredictable characters."

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung gave the film a high rating and wrote: “It is all played excellently. Despite its highly emotional theme, the film never seems so intrusive, not even in its touching finale, in which the mentally disabled finally meet behind their protective shields. The last words - “Just say yes. Or? Please! ”- in their simple size they have the power of a life maxim. That is rare and resonates. "

Audience rating

The quota was 5.12 million viewers.
