The icon was a German coaster built in 1937 that sank off the west coast of Jutland or Schleswig-Holstein on February 23, 1967 during hurricane Xanthia , later also referred to as Adolph Bermpohl hurricane due to the disaster of the rescue cruiser Adolph Bermpohl .

history

The ship was built under construction number 113 at the Schulte & Bruns shipyard in Emden for Johann Fesefeldt in Uetersen . The launch took place on July 29, 1937. The ship was put into service on September 30, 1937 as Adelheid . It was initially around 35 meters long and 7.65 m wide and measured at 200 GRT. The ship's carrying capacity was 430 t.

During the Second World War , the ship was used as a light artillery carrier. It was initially intended for the Seelöwe company , which ultimately did not invade Great Britain, but was later used to protect the port in Borkum . In May 1945 it was confiscated by Great Britain in Emden and returned to the shipping company in early June.

In April 1951 the ship was extended at the shipyard and was then measured with 288 GRT. The previous shipowner sold the coaster to Harald Sietas in Uetersen in 1960, who had it extended again in March 1961 by Pohl & Jozwiak in Hamburg . The ship, now measured at 344 GRT, was sold to Rudolf Franz in Krautsand in 1965 , who renamed it Ikone .

In February 1967 the ship was on its way from Esbjerg to Hamburg with a load of gravel . On February 23, 1967, it got caught in hurricane Xanthia . The last report came from southwest of Fanø . A floating hatch cover was later salvaged off Eiderstedt by the rescue cruiser Ruhr-Stahl . In addition, a helicopter of the German Navy found a battered lifeboat of the icon . The ship and crew remained missing.
