Illias Almahady

Illias Almahady (* 1944 in Iferouane ) is a Nigerien officer .

Life

Illias Almahady attended elementary and middle school and initially worked as a postal worker. In 1966 he joined the Nigerien armed forces . As a first lieutenant he was in command of various companies from 1981 : the 5th motorized Sahara company in Tahoua , the 3rd combat company and the 4th motorized Sahara company in N'Guigmi .

Almahady was then used in civil administration. From 1988 to 1989 he was Prefect of Tahoua Department . In his capacity as prefect, he took part in the founding congress of the then unity party National Development Society in May 1989 . From 1989 to 1991 he worked as prefect of the department of Maradi and in 1991 as prefect of the department of Diffa . In 1992 Almahady was employed as an office manager at the General Staff. He then worked from 1993 as Director of Public Relations and Social Welfare in the Ministry of Defense. He was also a member of the electoral commission for the parliamentary elections on January 12, 1995 .

Illias Almahady was a member of the twelve-member military junta of the Council of National Welfare , which came to power in a military coup in January 1996 and ruled Niger until December 1996 under the chairmanship of Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara . During this time Almahady took over the office of prefect of the troubled Agadez department and received the rank of lieutenant colonel . Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara remained after disputed elections even after the dissolution of the military junta to 1999 head of state.

In June 1997 a soldier mutiny broke out in the Agadez garrison and Prefect Almahady was arrested. After negotiations, he was released and was able to leave for the capital Niamey . He did not return to Agadez, but was sent to the Nigerian embassy in Paris that same year as a defense attaché. In 2000 he was appointed Colonel , but in 2010 he became president of the state research institute for civil engineering, already retiring from the armed forces.
