action

The film is set in Sicily shortly after the end of the Second World War . The young judge Guido Schiavi was recently transferred to Capodarso. When a man was attacked by strangers, Schiavi encounters a wall of silence during his investigation. The locals know: Talking about the Mafia or trying to evade their “law” can be fatal.

In the past, when the mine could still feed the people, everyone had their livelihood. However, this has changed dramatically since its shutdown. Schiave wants to help the people and is negotiating with the mine owner, Baron Lo Vasto. To Schiave's astonishment, this verbally suits him very well; but with this he only wants to distract from his own dark business. In fact, however, he tries to postpone the clearance of the mine again and again. After his attempt to bribe the judge is unsuccessful, he hires a killer to eliminate the person he dislikes.

Schiave and the Baron's daughter have fallen in love. On the day of their wedding of all times, a new murder occurs. Shortly afterwards, a member of the Mafia is arrested. The secret society suspects the carter Paolo as an informer and decides to kill him and free the prisoner.

The miners are fed up with being fobbed off with just words. They forcibly occupy the pit. Schiave gets into a conflict of conscience: On the one hand, he wants to help people, but on the other hand, he now has to take action against them and end their illegal actions. Thereby he turns the whole population against him. The judge sees no other way out than to leave Capodarso. Then he got the news of Paolo's murder. Immediately, he called the population together and gave a fiery speech in which he condemned everyone for murder. His words do not fail to have an effect; he succeeds in awakening people's consciences. They surround Paolo's murderer and hand him over to the judge.

criticism

The lexicon of international films draws the following conclusion: “The third film, Germis, comes from its neo-vist phase; it has a straightforward story that is staged in a competent and committed manner. "
