occupation

In the shadow of the bridge (AKA A Hídember , english The Bridgeman ), a German - Hungarian co-production with the support of FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and BR is a historical film from the year 2003 . Directed by Géza Bereményi, the main role played by Károly Eperjes as Count István Széchenyi .

The script was written by Can Togay János , who in the meantime was employed as a cultural attaché at the Hungarian embassy in Berlin and as a lecturer at the Babelsberg film school. Directed by Géza Bereményi , Sandor Soeth acted as executive producer . The production costs were over 7.5 million USD, which was many times the budget of the Hungarian film subsidy Magyar Filmunió .

The film was submitted as a Hungarian entry at the American film festival Houston Worldfest in 2003 and won a Golden Remi Award for best historical and biographical film. In 2006, the film was shown in Chennai, India as part of a film festival.

action

The film takes place during the Habsburg monarchy from 1820 to 1860 and shows the life of the Hungarian Count Széchenyi. The count, endowed with extraordinary intellectual abilities and wealth, seduced his brother's wife as a young man, which in the subsequent scandal ruined his career as an officer. The sudden death of the humiliated woman drastically changes Széchenyi's character, who then becomes obsessed with taking responsibility and wants to overcome his fate by accomplishing great works.

He becomes the leader of the Hungarian opposition and - despite his intentions and upbringing - the enemy of the Habsburgs.

controversy

The production of the film was allegedly "financially and ideologically" supported by Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz - Hungarian Citizens Association. In the 2002 election campaign, political opponents were described as supporters of international and foreign capital, while Fidesz - similar to Széchenyi in the historical context against the Austrian monarchy - advocated the interests of Hungary.

criticism

"Entertaining history lesson."

“[...] and the actors are convincing throughout. A big drawback (sic!) Is the script that leaves the viewer alone time and time again, so that they can only follow the story with difficulty, what is happening and why it is happening. It would have been better to stage Bereményi's whole life instead of unifying loose episodes into a fragmented whole. "

"Romantic costume drama with clearly legible, political references to the present"

"The epic, most expensive Hungarian film to date impresses with its good actors and elaborate equipment."

Trivia

In the film, the Hungarian adult model Sandra Shine has one of his few roles in a mainstream production.
