Economic Complexity Index

The index of economic complexity is an economic indicator that is intended to illustrate the diversification of goods exports from different economies. A country achieves a high level of economic complexity when it exports a large variety of different types of goods to as diversified a number of trading partners as possible. The index value is determined from the existing data on foreign trade in the relevant countries. For example, B. Saudi Arabia is primarily an export good (oil and processed petroleum products) to a large number of different countries. Due to the low diversification of the trading goods with a simultaneous high diversification of the trading partners, the country achieved a place in the middle of the ranking.

The index was designed by the Chilean statistician César Hidalgo from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Venezuelan economist Ricardo Hausmann from Harvard University .
