The Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing ( Chinese  中国科学院 南京 地质 古生物 研究所 , Pinyin Zhongguo kexueyuan Nanjing dizhi gushengwu yanjiusuo ) is a research institution of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing in the Chinese province of Jiangsu .

history

The institute was founded on May 7, 1951 and is the most important Chinese research institute for paleobiology and stratigraphy .

The first director of the institute was the geologist, paleontologist and vice-president of Academia Sinica Li Siguang (JS Lee; 李四光). Other directors were:

The current director is Yang Qun杨 群.

Research departments

The research department for paleontology of invertebrates ( 古 动物学 研究室 , Gudongwuxue yanjiushi ) deals with the origin, evolution and extinction of main groups of invertebrates. It also conducts research in the field of invertebrate systematics , their phylogenetic relationships and other relevant topics. Current research projects deal, among other things, with the evolution of early Metazoa , with the tectonics and paleobiology of Gondwana and Tethys, and with the Jehol biota .

In the research department for paleobotany and palynology ( 古 植物 与 古 孢粉 学 研究室 , Guzhiwu yu Gubaofenxue yanjiushi ) are among other things the early terrestrial vascular plants, the Permo - carbonic flora of Cathay as well as the development of the plants in the Quaternary against the background of Climate change the goal of research. Furthermore, the institute studies leads during the extraction of raw materials from, such as in the exploration of oil and gas reserves in Tarim -, Junggar and Turpan - Hami - sedimentary basins of Xinjiang and in the East China Sea , exploring the biostratigraphy of coal resources in China.

The tasks of the research department for micropalaeontology ( 微 体 古 生物学 研究室 , Weiti gushengwuxue yanjiushi ) are, among other things, in the field of systematics, evolution, biostratigraphy and paleecology of the main groups of microfossils, in the paleontology of the Precambrian and the development of life.

The National Priority Laboratory of Paleobiology and Stratigraphy ( 现代古生物学及地层学开放研究实验室, Xiandai gushengwuxue he dicengxue guojia zhongdian shiyanshi ) eventually leads investigations of the early days of the development of life by working on the development of international geological time scale with and researching about in the fields of paleogeography and paleoclimatology . His research on the Chengjiang Faunal Community and what is known as the Cambrian Explosion has won awards.

Publications

The institute publishes four specialist journals. The journal Acta Palaeontogica Sinica (since 1953) is sponsored by the Palaeontological Society of China ( Chinese Paleontological Society ). Further periodicals are the Acta Micropalaeontologica Sinica (since 1984), the Journal of Stratigraphy (since 1966) and Palaeoworld (since 2007), which is published by Elsevier . All magazines appear quarterly.
