MCS-96 is the name of a 1982 by Intel introduced family of 16-bit - microcontrollers . It consists of the basic types 8094, 8095, 8096, 8097 and 8098. A special feature of this family is a register architecture in which the CPU can work equally well on all registers of a register bank without the accumulator as a bottleneck.
MCS-96 microcontrollers are available in 48-pin or 68-pin housing, with or without A / D converter and with 8 Kbytes or without read-only memory (8 0 9x without ROM, 8 3 9x with ROM ; 8 7 9x with EPROM ). All versions have a serial interface including a clock generator.

8x196 / 8xC196 family
Later, Intel brought out the 8XC196 series, which brought the MCS-96 family the breakthrough. There were several subfamilies in the 80XC196 family:
- HSIO (High Speed I / O) with the controllers 8XC196KB, KC and KD with ADC and an optional PTS (Peripheral Transaction Server), a kind of DMA controller
- EPA (Event Processor Array) with the controllers 8XC196KR, KT, NT and NP with up to 1 MB external memory and various serial buses
- MC (Motion Control) with the controllers 8XC196MC and MD with 3-phase waveform generator
