The Irish League 1896/97 was the seventh season of the highest all-Irish football league . Glentoran FC became champions for the second time.

The four teams from last season, as well as the two approved Belfast Celtic and North Staffordshire Regiment formed the sextet for this season. They competed against each other twice on ten match days. At the end of the season there was a playoff for second place.
