The Irish League 1996/97 was the 96th season of the highest Northern Irish football league . Crusaders FC became champions for the fourth time. This season was one of the few football championships in Europe in which all participating teams had already won a championship in the past.

The eight teams played against each other four times on a total of 28 match days. The bottom of the table played against the third in the First Division in the relegation. The league was increased to ten clubs for the following season.
