Ismael Rolón

Ismael Blas Rolón Silvero SDB (born January 24, 1914 in Caazapá , Paraguay , † June 8, 2010 in Asunción , Paraguay) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Asunción . Ismael Rolón was instrumental in overthrowing Alfredo Stroessner's regime and in building democracy in Paraguay.

Life

Ismael Rolón Silvero Blas, one of nine siblings, visited in 1927 with only 13 years, the College of the Salesians in Montevideo, joined in 1931 the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1932 and put professed from. After further studies in theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Universidad Católica de Córdoba in Córdoba, Argentina, he was ordained a priest on November 23, 1941 . He then worked as a professor at the "Colegio Monseñor Lasagna", the University of the Salesians in Paraguay.

In 1960 he was by John XXIII. appointed first episcopal prelate (span: "Prelado Nullíus") of the then prelature Caacupé . Ismael Rolón was the Council Father of the first to fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965.

Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Furnos Maior in 1965 . He received his episcopal ordination on January 23, 1966, the Archbishop of Asunción Juan José Aníbal Mena Porta ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Concepción y Chaco Emilio Sosa Gaona SDB, and Archbishop Vittore Ugo Righi , then nuncio in Paraguay. Silvero transferred the prelature to the status of a diocese in 1967 and was then appointed the first bishop of the Caacupé diocese.

Paul VI appointed him in 1970 archbishop of the Archdiocese of Asunción. He was also President of the Paraguayan Bishops' Conference. In 1989 his resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II . He died of a febrile illness. Ismael Rolón was buried in Asunción Cathedral.

Act

Ismael Rolón was a committed opponent of the dictatorial regimes of Alfredo Stroessner and Andrés Rodríguez . On public occasions he demonstratively kept his distance from the representatives of the dictatorship, made public that Stroessner had opposition members, including priests, tortured and excommunicated those responsible, including Interior Minister Sabino Montanaro and Police Chief Francisco Brítez. He is considered an advocate of human rights and freedom of expression and a central figure in the implementation of fundamental rights in Paraguay. He was instrumental in the overthrow of the dictator Alfredo Stroessner's regime.

For his services to Paraguay he was awarded the Orden Nacional del Mérito, en el Grado de Gran Cruz in 1995 and 2010 .
