Iso Müller , OSB (born December 13, 1901 in Altdorf as Adalbert Müller ; † January 11, 1987 in Disentis ; resident in Altdorf) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman , theologian and historian .

Life

Family and education

Born in Altdorf and baptized Catholic, Adalbert Müller was the son of the lawyer Alban Müller and his wife Elisabeth, née Arnold. He changed after visiting the school in Feldkirch to the Einsiedeln seminary , where he acquired in 1922 the federal maturity . In the same year he entered the Benedictine monastery Distensis , and a year later he was solemnly professed . Adalbert Müller, who had taken the religious name " Iso ", began studying theology in Bregenz and Einsiedeln , and in 1927 he was ordained a priest. As a result, he turned to studying history at the University of Freiburg , which he obtained in 1931 with a doctorate as a Dr. phil. completed.

Professional background

In 1931 Father Iso Müller got a job as a history teacher at the Disentis monastery school . In addition, he was employed there as a monastery archivist, in 1980 he resigned from these functions due to reasons of age. The focus of his historical research was on the monasteries of Disentis and Müstair , the Christianization of Swiss areas and the culture of the Churretian Middle Ages and the Baroque period. In addition, Müller emerged as the author of fundamental works on political history, pass traffic and Wals migrations in the Central Alps. His thematically diverse oeuvre comprises over 350 publications , several of which have appeared in book form.

In 1970, Müller received the Culture Prize of the Canton of Graubünden, and in 1986 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Lucerne on the occasion of his 85th birthday . He was considered an internationally recognized historian.
