Course of the Istra (Истра) in the catchment area of the Moskva |
The I stra ( Russian Истра ) is a 113 kilometer long river in Moscow Oblast ( Russia ) and a left tributary of the Moskva .
The Istra rises near the urban-type settlement Powarowo northwest of Moscow , roughly between the cities of Zelenograd and Solnnogorsk . Shortly after the source, the Istra merges into the 22-kilometer-long and up to three-kilometer-wide Istra reservoir , which was formed in 1935 and serves as one of the reservoirs for Moscow's water supply. A little south of the reservoir, the river passes the city of the same name (formerly called Voskressensk), which is named after it , crosses the Moscow-Riga railway line and continues to flow curvy in a south-easterly direction. In the village of Petrovo-Dalneje, a little south of the cities of Krasnogorsk and Dedovsk , the Istra flows into the Moskva. In the lower reaches and the estuary the Istra reaches a width of about 20 to 30 meters. The river is mainly fed by meltwater.
Except for the city of Istra, there are no larger towns on the riverbank. Because of this and the continuously wooded landscape in the river, the banks of the Istra and the reservoir are popular recreational areas in the greater Moscow area. As early as the 19th century, nature on the Istra inspired landscape painter Levitan , who had a summer house near Voskressensk. During the Soviet era, numerous sanatoriums and hostels were built on the banks of the Istra .
The New Jerusalem Monastery, known as a place of pilgrimage and located on a high section of the banks of the Istra, gives the river its nickname "Russian Jordan ".
