history

Istrup is first mentioned in a document in 1231. The village was probably created through the settlement of several neighboring properties. The largest and most important court was the estate of the Knights of Istincthorp , which was protected by a castle. The location of this castle probably corresponded to the current church. The name of this noble family appeared in documents as early as 1158, but disappeared by the end of the 15th century. In 1507 the Lords of Asseburg took over the fiefdom of the Knights of Istincthorp. The history of Istrup between the 13th and 18th centuries is largely unexplored. It was not until the year 1800 that history began to be written continuously.

At that time, Istrup had the shape of a street village with properties lined up on either side of a street. The village was bordered by the Paderborner Weg, which ran south on a hill, and to the north of it by the Alten Postweg, which was also built on a hill . The village of Istrup was built between these two forest-covered hills. Due to the narrowness of the valley between two mountain ranges, agriculture was only possible to a limited extent. This fact led to the fact that as early as 1818 more money was being earned through the linen trade and day laborers working outside than in agriculture. Teacher Ferdinand Ernst wrote in his chronicle of the place in 1818 that there were other reasons for the poor effectiveness of agriculture. He mentions that agriculture is poorly practiced and with little love, diligence and attention . In addition, the yield is so low that it is hardly sufficient even for personal use, let alone surplus for sales. Other major flaws included the neglect of cattle breeding and the lack of support staff in agriculture. A good way of increasing income in the 19th century for many Istrians was to produce linen at home . In many households at that time there was a loom . The products were taken to Kassel and sold on the markets there.

After the First World War , the economic situation deteriorated. Agriculture was now primarily used for self-sufficiency and life security. In Istrup, goats , geese , chickens and other small animals were kept in almost every household . Statistics from 1924 show the following figures for 82 households with a total of 471 people: 12 families farmed with horses; 17 families plowed their fields with draft cows ; 19 families had one dairy cow and 34 families had one or more goats.

After the Second World War , agriculture became increasingly mechanized. For this reason, more and more small farmers gave up their farms. Today there are only three full-time farms left in Istrup. The previously independent municipality of Istrup was incorporated into the city of Brakel as part of the municipal reform on January 1, 1970.

Istrup companies - u. a. two renowned construction companies and the construction training center - today offer more than 70 jobs on site plus apprenticeships for trainees.
