Italia is a white wine variety . It is a new breed between Bicane x Muscat d'Hamburg. The crossing took place in Rome in 1911 by the breeder Alberto Piròvano . In terms of volume, the variety is the third most common table grape in the world and is found in numerous countries around the world. In Italy , it is mainly grown in the southern regions of Apulia , Lazio and Sicily and occupies a total of 37,000 hectares of vineyards. In addition, it is known in Egypt , Argentina , Australia , Brazil , France , Greece , Morocco , Portugal , Spain , South Africa and Tunisia . There are currently only small stocks of the Italia variety in California . In 2008 the acreage was 61 acres (approx. 15 hectares ).

In Brazil a reddish variant, Italia Rubi, was found near São Paulo . At the beginning of the 20th century, Pierre Viala reported on a red variety in Peru that was also called Italia.

Parentage: Bicane x Muscat de Hambourg . The parentage was confirmed by genetic testing.

Synonyms

The Italia grape variety is also known under the names Doña Sofia, Idéal (in France, for a few years after the Second World War), Italian Muscat, Moscatel Italiano (in Spain), Moschato Rozaki, Muscat d'Italie (in Tunisia and Morocco), Pirovano 65 and Uva Italia known.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is woolly hairy and dotted with carmine red. The yellowish young leaves are hairy and orange-colored.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyre-shaped, open, and more rarely closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide compared to other grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to pointed cone-shaped grapes are large to very large (on average 627 grams) and with loose berries. The elongated berries are very large (8 grams on average) and an amber-colored yellow that turns slightly reddish when fully ripe. The skin of the berry is thick. The crunchy flesh has a light nutmeg aroma.

The variety ripens about 30 - 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late. Italia is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
