Ivan Gašparovič (2004)

Ivan Gašparovič [ ˈivan ˈgaʃparɔvitʃ ] (born March 27, 1941 in Poltár ) is a former Slovak politician . He was Attorney General of Czechoslovakia (1990–1992), President of the Slovak Parliament (1992–1998) and the third President of Slovakia (2004–2014).

Gašparovič was a leading member of the HZDS party (1992-2002) and was considered one of the closest confidants of the authoritarian party leader Vladimír Mečiar . After leaving the HZDS, he became chairman of the HZD he founded (2002-2004) and, although his party never played a relevant political role, was twice elected president.

biography

Gašparovič's father Vladimir Gašparović came to Slovakia from Croatia during the First World War and worked as a teacher at a high school in Bratislava .

Gašparovič studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava from 1959 to 1964 and then taught at this university from 1968 to 1990. From July 1990 to March 1992 he was the Czechoslovak Attorney General. From the summer of 1992 he was a leading member of Vladimír Mečiar's HZDS party, and from 1992 to 1998 President of Parliament, from July to October 1998 he was also the incumbent President (together with Vladimír Mečiar).

Gašparovič was considered to be the closest confidante of Mečiar, to whom he remained loyal even in the most difficult situations. When he was no longer to be nominated for the parliamentary elections in July 2002, he left the HZDS in protest and founded his own party, the “ Movement for Democracy ” (HZD), which only got 3.28% in the parliamentary elections and thus did not get into parliament.

In 2004 Gašparovič took part in the presidential elections, reached 22.28% in the first ballot on April 3, 2004 and surprisingly took second place behind Vladimír Mečiar. He won the runoff election on April 17, 2004 with 59.91% of the vote and took office on June 15, 2004.

In the presidential election on March 21, 2009 , Gašparovič received 46.7% of the votes cast, but missed an absolute majority. In a runoff election on April 4, 2009, Gašparovič ran against the former Christian Democratic Minister of Social Affairs, Iveta Radičová , who won 38.0% of the votes in the March 21, 2009 election. He won 55.53% of the vote in the runoff election and thus remained in office.

In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tokyo .

In the 2014 presidential election , Gašparovič was unable to run again as the  Slovak constitution only allowed him to serve as president for two consecutive terms. On June 15, 2014, Andrej Kiska took office as his successor.
