Ivana Koubek (2018)

Ivana Koubek (* 8. February 1959 in Aussig ) is one of the Czech Republic coming in since 1988 Regensburg living, visual artist . Her artistic work ranges from paintings , frescoes and graphics to book illustrations and posters to designs for theaters and porcelain .

life and work

Koubek first completed an education at the Volkskunstschule in Aussig and the technical college (SUPŠS) for glass art in Železný Brod with a focus on modern glass design, painting and graphics. This was followed by private studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague between 1978 and 1981 under the academic painter and professor Jan Smetana .

She gained her first artistic experience in the former Czechoslovakia as a glass designer at Preciosa . After arriving in Regensburg, Koubek drew attention to the establishment of the Natural History Museum in East Bavaria with reconstructions of geological history and made a name for himself with various posters as well as with art-educational and socially integrative projects. Koubek reacted to the opening of the border after the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia with several German-Czech art projects as a contribution to friendship between the two neighboring countries.

In addition to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize awarded by the City of Regensburg for 25 years of Regensburger Dult 1997 (Dultmaus), the Bavarian Jazzweekend 1998 and UNESCO World Heritage 2015 as well as the large poster for the Regensburger Bürgerfest 2009, her frescoes and especially known for large-format painting cycles. In 2001 she designed the interior of the newly built chapel in Neudorf (municipality of Pettendorf ) using the fresco technique with a sacred theme.

In terms of content, Koubek deals with biblical and mythological topics, works of world literature and events from European history. Since 2019, the virtual worlds of computer games have been added as a source of inspiration. In contrast to most of the Game Art artists , her work is not created using the computer, but using traditional techniques such as drawing and painting.

Both figural and abstract painting are represented in her work, whereby the influences of Czech Cubism and quotations from old masters can be recognized. Her preferred techniques are drawing , especially with charcoal , red chalk , Indian ink , watercolors as well as acrylic paints on canvas worked up with sand . While Koubek's earlier work is quite colorful, at the beginning of the second millennium the color is often reduced to black and white, gray and brown tones. Since 2019/2020, the color palette has been repeating Koubek's current colors in computer games.
