János Kalmár (photographer)

János Kalmár (* 1937 in Budapest ) is an Austrian photographer and visual artist . He works primarily as a freelance photographer.

Life

János Kalmár was born in Budapest in 1937 and has lived in Vienna since December 1956 . In parallel to his photography training, he studied at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna.

Since the early 1960s he has been working as a freelance photographer and since the 1980s he has been Vice President of the Syndicate of Austrian Press Photographers.

He has had solo exhibitions in Vienna, New York , Washington, DC , Alberta , Buenos Aires , Hamburg , Brussels , Bratislava , Sarajevo , Kiev , Sofia , Belgrade , Bucharest , Istanbul , Zagreb , Vilnius , Krakow , Riga . As the author of numerous illustrated books on, among others, the Vienna Ringstrasse , Otto Wagner and turn-of-the-century architecture in Vienna, Prague and Budapest, cultural-historical topics as well as landscape and city portraits are the focus of his work.

His main concern is to tell the stories behind the pictures in addition to the aesthetics and atmosphere.
