Jämjö is a village ( Tatort ) in the municipality of Karlskrona in the southern Swedish province of Blekinge län and the historic province of Blekinge . Jämjö is on the E22 (Europaväg 22) between Karlskrona and Kalmar , near the coast to the Baltic Sea.
history
The name Jämjö can be traced back to a field name . An indication of this can be found in local parlance, which uses the local preposition auf instead of in . The residents of Jämjö have always lived on Jämjö.
An undated map shows only a church and a single house on the site of today's Jämjös, on the road from Karlskrona to Kalmar. The spelling on this card is Jemjö . Further to the west, outside the present-day town, is a hamlet consisting of five buildings, which is described as Jemj . However, the card itself is titled with the spelling Iemiö Sockn (Parish Iemiö). On another map from 1688 the spelling Jämbgiö is used and in 1758 the place is written as Jämjö , as it is today . On this map, too, only the church is shown, to the east of it an inn (Jämjö Krog) and an additional bridge that crosses a river to the west of the church. The stream is now called Hammarbyån . The medieval stone church was rebuilt between 1795 and 1822, and finally to become today's church.
From 1899 to 1965 Jämjö was accessible by rail. The railroad was particularly important for the local small-scale industry, for the cement works and the starch factory. After rail operations were stopped, the old station was also demolished in 1981. Today only a railway remiese and the street name Stationsvägen (Bahnhofstrasse) reminds of the railway.
Jämjö became a municipality in 1863. The original municipality of Jämjö was expanded to include Kristianopel and Torhamn in 1952 . In 1963 Ramdala and Sturkö also joined Jämjö. In 1974 Jämjö was incorporated into the municipality of Karlskrona.

The area around Jämjö is dominated by agriculture. In addition to growing cereals, there is also dairy farming. In addition to agriculture, a large number of small businesses have set up on Jämjö. As a major employer, the textile service company Berendsen plc has a location on Jämjö.
The town center is located directly on the E22, which divides Jämjö into a northern and a southern part. It essentially consists of a supermarket, a parking lot, small catering establishments, a health food store and the old schoolhouse, which is now the school for the lower grades. In 1973 the new middle and upper school building was completed in the southern part of the village and named after the writer Ragnar Jändel . Other striking structures are the church in the western part of the village, the water tower on an elevation north of the village and the pedestrian overpass over the E22 in the center of the village.
