history

The Jewish cemetery in Walsdorf existed before it was first mentioned in a document. The 70.10 ares large cemetery was the burial place of the Bamberg Jewish community until 1851. Since the 17th century it was jointly owned by the Jewish communities of Bamberg , Bischberg , Burgebrach , Grassmansdorf , Lisberg , Reichmannsdorf , Trabelsdorf , Trunstadt , Viereth and Walsdorf . Today there are still about 1100 tombstones ( Mazewot ). Most are made of sandstone and only a few of the younger ones are made of granite .

The older part of the cemetery is behind the entrance gate and the younger part is on the slope of the steeply sloping terrain. The cemetery was desecrated several times in the 20th century.
