The Jewish cemetery Altengronau is a Jewish cemetery in Altengronau in the Main-Kinzig district ( Hesse ). It was established in 1661 and served as a burial place for several communities, including some from neighboring Bavaria . The cemetery is located on the mountain southeast of Altengronau on the edge of the forest and has a size of 88.87 acres . It houses around 1500 tombstones from the period between 1691 and 1937.

architecture

The design of the tombstones ( Mazewa ) was carried out consistently until the 19th century in the basic form of upright, hewn and upwardly vaulted grave steles made of sandstone, decorated with symbols such as the blessing hands of the Kohanim , the Levite jug or the tree of life .

The Tahara House , built in 1856, houses a stone for the ritual washing of corpses, as well as the room of the Chewra Kadisha (burial brotherhood).
