Geographical location

The cemetery is located in a slightly secluded location in the forest southeast of the village. It can be reached via the Gerbersgipfel street . To the east of the path - outside of the village - there is an old sandstone quarry, above which is the cemetery.

history

The inscriptions on the preserved tombstones show that the cemetery was used between 1760 and 1910. The deceased from the communities of Breitenborn , Lieblos , Gettenbach , Mittel-Gründau , Niedergründau and Roth were buried in the cemetery. From the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century there were many Jewish inhabitants in the village of Gettenbach (1786: 92 = almost ⅔ of the total of 145 inhabitants; 1790: 62 = 23% of 273 inhabitants in total; 1835: 44, about 20% of the population ); Already at the beginning of the 19th century there is said to have been a synagogue in the village, which has two stately courtyards and 20 houses . In any case, as early as 1828, the community elder Jonas Grünebaum applied for the employment of a teacher for the ten school-age children. In the 1850s and 1860s, teacher Baruch Strauss from Lieblos gave religious instruction ; the Jewish community is said to have had over 50 members at that time. Jewish Germans who were born in Gettenbach died as soldiers in the First World War . The burial place was also used for Jews who were born in Gettenbach but died elsewhere.

investment

The cemetery had no fencing and a metal fence has recently been erected. About 20 sandstone tombstones with Hebrew (and German inscriptions for those who were last buried) have been preserved.
