New Steinheim Jewish Cemetery
The New Jewish Cemetery Steinheim was the cemetery for the inhabitants of the Jewish faith in Groß-Steinheim , today the city of Hanau in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse . It existed as the successor to the Old Jewish Cemetery in Steinheim since 1892 and was initially used until 1937. Recently, the newly founded Jewish community in Hanau has been buried again.
Geographical location
The New Jewish Cemetery is located on Odenwaldstrasse near the Steinheimer Südfriedhof. Today it is surrounded by residential buildings on three sides.
history
After the old Jewish cemetery in Steinheim was fully occupied and closed in 1892, the new cemetery was inaugurated at the end of 1892. The originally oldest gravestones show the years 1892 and 1895. When the old cemetery on the corner of Darmstädter and Dalbergstrasse was destroyed in 1933–35, corpses had to be exhumed and buried in the new cemetery. That is why there are older stones on the south wall with the year from 1871, before the cemetery was set up.
The New Cemetery also served as a burial place for the Jewish residents of the surrounding areas. The community of Groß-Steinheim also included the Jews from Klein-Steinheim (the two places were only merged in 1938), Klein-Auheim , Hainstadt and Dietesheim . The last burial for the time being took place in 1937.
Since the 2000s, burials of the newly founded Jewish community in Hanau have occasionally taken place here.
investment
The New Jewish Cemetery covers only 700 m² and is surrounded by a high wall made of bubble basalt , the entrance is on the north side. In the south-western corner there is a tool shed from the 19th century, which is built in half-timbered construction.
The cemetery is owned by the State Association of Jewish Communities in Hesse and is maintained by the City of Hanau.
