Marköbel Jewish cemetery
The Marköbel Jewish Cemetery was the cemetery for the inhabitants of the Jewish faith in Marköbel , a district of the Hammersbach community in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse . It existed since 1835 and was used until 1937.
Geographical location
The Jewish cemetery is located on Lindenstrasse, on the corner of Nordstrasse, northwest of the town center. It lies between the old and the new Christian cemetery of Marköbel.
history
Jewish residents of Marköbel are first recorded in the years 1691/92 and 1717. In 1754 the community (together with the hamlet Hirzbach ) counted 33 people.
As in numerous places in the County of Hanau-Münzenberg , the Marköbel Jews also had to bury their dead in the Windecken Jewish cemetery established in 1497 . High funeral costs and practical difficulties with the transfer meant that the Jewish community sought to set up its own cemetery. This was achieved in 1835 with the acquisition of a garden in the large Burgfeld for ten guilders . In 1885 the cemetery was expanded.
The last burial in the cemetery took place in 1937. The synagogue not far from the cemetery at Nordstrasse 13 was completely destroyed in November 1938. The majority of the Jewish population had already emigrated at this time, moved to Frankfurt am Main or other places.
investment
The cemetery has an area of 463 m². 49 graves are still preserved. The enclosure consists of a quarry stone wall in the north and a hedge or a metal fence on the other sides. There is a sign on the east side.
