Jürgen Förster (historian)

Jürgen Förster (born May 3, 1940 in Reichenberg ) is a German historian .

biography

After graduating from high school and doing military service, Förster studied history and English in Cologne and Nottingham from 1962 to 1968 . In 1966 he received the Postgraduate Diploma in English Studies and passed his state examination in Cologne in 1968 . 1974 Forester with Andreas Gruber Hill with a thesis on the effects of the disaster of Stalingrad 1942/1943 on the European allies Germany and Turkey to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1970 to 2000 he worked as a research assistant at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) and was involved in the Second World War project and its associated anthology, The German Reich and the Second World War .

During his academic career, Förster held lectureships in Freiburg and Berlin and held several visiting professorships, including at Arizona State University , Ohio State University , the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , the University of Glasgow , the University of Melbourne and Flinders University . From 2005 to 2013 Förster was a lecturer in military history at the chair for modern and contemporary history in Freiburg.

Förster is a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of War in History .
