Jürgen Gneveckow (* 1952 in Tailfingen , now part of Albstadt ) is a German politician of the CDU . He was Lord Mayor of Albstadt from 1999 to 2015 .

Professional background

After graduating from high school , Gneveckow studied economics and business administration at the universities of Regensburg and Freiburg and graduated in 1977 with a degree in business administration and economics . Between 1978 and 1982 he did his doctorate in Regensburg, at the same time he worked as an assistant and academic advisor at the University of Passau until 1985 . In 1985 he began an advisory role in the Federal Chancellery and in 1987 moved to the Federal Environment Ministry , in the field of international environmental policy. From 1993 to 1996 he was seconded to the European Commission's Environment Directorate-General in Brussels as a national expert .

Terms of office as mayor

In 1999 he was elected Lord Mayor of Albstadt. In 2007 Gneveckow was re-elected with almost 65 percent of the vote. The term of office ended on May 31, 2015.

In 2015 Gneveckow applied again for the mayoral election. In the first ballot, Gneveckow was just ahead of Klaus Konzelmann ( Free Voters ), who had not officially applied and therefore had to be noted by the voters with his full name and address on the ballot papers. Both candidates missed an absolute majority, so that a second ballot was necessary. In the second ballot, Gneveckow was clearly defeated with 38.3 percent compared to 60.2 percent of his competitor. The circumstances of the election triggered a nationwide media response. At the end of April, Gneveckow announced that he would take “plenty of free time” for the rest of his term of office and say goodbye to the city's employees on May 13th.

District council mandates

Gneveckow was a member of the district council from 1999 to 2015 and was last re-elected in 2014. There he was a member of the Administrative and Finance Committee. Gneveckow was criticized in 2005 in the district council because of an opinion that was to be financed by the city of Albstadt and published at a CDU event.

On April 30, 2015, Gneveckow held the prospect of retiring from the district council at the last meeting of the Albstadt municipal council that he chaired and applied for his resignation four days later. In the following meeting of the district council on July 6, 2015, a successor was sworn in, Gneveckow himself did not take part in the meeting.

Others

Gneveckow was at times a member of the credit committee and deputy chairman of the administrative board of Sparkasse Zollernalb .

Gneveckow is married and has two children.
