Jürgen Guddat (born March 17, 1941 in Halle ; † May 29, 2018 ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

Training and doctorate

Guddat completed his school days with the Abitur. From 1960 to 1965 he studied mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1965 to 1967 he prepared for his doctorate with a scientific degree.

In 1967 he completed additional studies in Bucharest . In 1968 he graduated as Dr. rer. nat. with a thesis on the subject of a trajectory method for solving convex optimization problems by František Nožička .

Employment

From 1968 to 1971 Guddat worked as a research assistant at the Humboldt University, Department of Mathematical Optimization . In 1970 an additional degree followed at the Leningrad State University . In 1971 he was appointed university lecturer. In 1974 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on stability studies in quadratic parametric optimization . From 1977 to 2006 Guddat was a full professor at the Humboldt University, Department of Mathematical Optimization .

Visiting professorships

Research priorities

Guddat's main research interests were parametric nonlinear optimization , homotopy methods and operations research . Together with Dr. W. Gomez, P. Mbunga, Dr. D. Nowack, C. Solano, Prof. Dra. S. Allende (Universidad de la Habana), Prof. F. Guerra ( Universidad de las Américas , Puebla ), Prof. H. Th. Jongen ( RWTH Aachen ), Prof. Dr. J.-J. Rückmann ( Technische Universität Ilmenau ) he worked on the parametric optimization project funded by the German Research Foundation .

Editorial activities and international conferences

Guddat was co-editor of the series Approximation and Optimization , Peter Lang Verlag , Frankfurt a. M., Berlin-Bern-New York-Paris-Vienna. He served on the editorial boards of Yugoslav Journal of Operations Research, Journal of Convex Analysis, Revista Investigacion Operacional.

He was a member of the executive committees of the Parametric Optimization and Related Topics (V (1997 in Tokyo ), VI (1999 in Dubrovnik )) and Approximation and Optimization in the Caribbean (IV (1997 in Caracas ), V (1999 in Pointe-à- Pitre , Guadeloupe )), Chairman of the Program Committee International Conference on Operations Research (every two years in Havana , the 4th in March 2000). In total, Guddat organized more than 30 scientific conferences and also took care of their funding.
