Jürgen Ruhfus

Jürgen Fritz Werner Ruhfus (born August 4, 1930 in Bochum ; † February 25, 2018 ) was a German lawyer , diplomat and State Secretary .

Life and work

Jürgen Ruhfus, son of a graduate engineer , studied law and economics in Munich and Münster and as an exchange student in Denver , Colorado. In 1950 he joined the CDU . After Ruhfus had passed his first state examination in 1955, he became an attaché in the Foreign Office and accompanied Foreign Minister Heinrich von Brentano (CDU). In the meantime he was vice consul at the consulate in Dakar before Ruhfus joined the higher foreign service in 1959 .

From 1960 he worked as a counselor in the German embassy in Athens . In 1964, Ruhfus was awarded the title of Doctor of Audit with the publication The Constitutional Position of the Court of Auditors of Belgium and the Federal Court of Auditors. jur. PhD . From 1964 to 1970 he worked in the press department of the Foreign Office, which Ruhfus took over as head in 1966.

After serving as the first German ambassador in Nairobi between 1970 and 1973 , Ruhfus returned to the Foreign Office, where he was responsible for international affairs and later became head of department. From 1976 he was employed as head of Department II in the Federal Chancellery . Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt ( SPD ) made Jürgen Ruhfus his foreign and security policy advisor, making Ruhfus one of his closest confidants.

As the successor to Hans Hellmuth Ruete , he became ambassador to London in 1980 . As a result of the revision, Ruhfus returned to the Foreign Office at the end of 1983, where he became a permanent state secretary in July 1984 . In November 1987 he returned to the diplomatic service. Ruhfus succeeded Günther van Well as German ambassador in Washington . He held this position until he retired at the end of August 1992.

Furthermore, in 1993 Ruhfus became chairman of the German-British Society , of which he was last honorary president. Between 1992 and 2001 he was a member of the Adam Opel AG supervisory board .

Jürgen Ruhfus was married and had three daughters.
