Jürgen Schwarz (political scientist)

Jürgen Schwarz (born January 9, 1936 in Essen ; † March 1, 2020 ) was a German political scientist . He was Professor of International Relations at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich .

Life

Schwarz studied political science, sociology, history, philosophy and international law at the Universities of Cologne, Freiburg (among others with Johannes Vincke and Fritz Pringsheim ) and Geneva. During his studies he was among other things AStA chairman and involved in the Association of German Student Unions . In 1959 he passed the state examination in philosophy with Max Müller . In 1962 he was at Arnold Bergstraesser at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg with a thesis on the German student body in 1918 and 1923 and their position relative to the policy for Dr. phil. (summa cum laude) doctorate.

From 1962 to 1964 he was a consultant for political education at the headquarters of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ) in Düsseldorf. In 1963/64 he received a scholarship at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies . From 1964 to 1973 he worked as a scientific consultant or group leader at the Research Institute for International Politics and Security of the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP) in Ebenhausen, most recently he headed the “Western Europe and North America” group. In 1968/69 he was a John F. Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1973 he became a lecturer and professor for international politics at the University of Hamburg . From 1975 he held a full professorship for international relations at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich , where he headed the Institute for International Politics, Security Policy, Defense and International Law and founded the Faculty of Social Sciences and the " Political and Social Sciences " course. He also taught at the Munich School of Politics . His main research interests are European integration , US and French foreign and security policy, and international relations. His academic students include Jakob Kreidl , Ralph Rotte and Peter Bardehle .

1978/79 he was Distinguished Scholar at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC and 1982/83 NATO Research Fellow. He was also a member of the Joint Strategic Studies Group (Harvard / MIT). In the USA he was strongly influenced by Henry Kissinger .

Schwarz acted as editor of the articles on international politics (from 1977), the texts on the study of international relations (from 1978), the documents and materials on international politics (from 1994), the Ordo Inter Nationes (from 1997) and the studies on international politics (from 1997). He was a member of the Catholic Working Group on Development and Peace of the German Bishops' Conference and adviser for international politics at the Catholic Social Science Center in Mönchengladbach .
