Jürgen Thimme (born September 26, 1917 in Berlin ; † August 7, 2010 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Live and act

Jürgen Thimme, son of the historian Friedrich Thimme , served in the Navy from 1937 after graduating from high school and subsequent labor service . On April 3, 1937, he was an officer cadet , on May 1, 1938 Midshipman , on July 1, 1939 midshipman at sea, on August 1, 1939 Ensign and on September 1, 1941 Lieutenant . Thimme was the first commander of the submarine U 276 from December 9, 1942 to October 19, 1943, and from February 13, 1945 to May 8, 1945, the commander of U 716 . From 1945 to 1947 he was a prisoner of war.

From 1947 Thimme studied classical archeology and art history in Göttingen and in 1955 he was awarded with his dissertation “Chiusin ash boxes and sarcophagi of the Hellenistic period. A contribution to the chronology of Etruscan art ”to the Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, at the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg and at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Erlangen .

From March 1, 1959 until his retirement in 1982, Thimme was head of the antiques department of the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe ; he was the first archaeologist in this position. He significantly expanded the collection of antiquities through numerous new acquisitions; According to the customs of the time, mainly through the art trade and without questions about the provenance , so that the majority of the items were objects from robbery excavations . In 1974 he designed the exhibition "Picasso and Antiquity". He was particularly interested in the cultures of the Cyclades and Sardinia . His catalog of the exhibition "Art of the Cyclades", which opened in June 1976, with 581 objects of Cycladic culture and in particular of the Cycladic idols is considered a standard work. Thimme was honorary professor for classical archeology at the University of Heidelberg .

Thimme died in 2010 at the age of 92 after a long illness; his urn was buried in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe .

He was married to the Germanist and author Ulrike Thimme (* 1923), née Schauer; the couple's son was the RAF terrorist Johannes Thimme . His younger sister was the historian Annelise Thimme ; his older brother the German-American art historian and archaeologist Diether Thimme .
